NAME: NIKOLAI PLATONOVICH PATRUSHEV

BORN: 11 July, 1951 in Leningrad

EDUCATION: *Mr Patrushev graduated from the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute in 1974.  *He completed KGB training in 1975.

CAREER: *Upon graduation, Mr Patrushev was assigned to the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute’s design office, where he worked as an engineer. *Mr Patrushev started his career in the Leningrad organized crime and corruption unit, and was later promoted to head that unit.  *In 1990, Mr Patrushev reached the rank of Colonel, and was transferred to Karelia.  *His initial position in Karelia was Head of the local counterintelligence department.  *He was a member of the Communist Party until 1991.  *In 1992, he was appointed Minister of National Security to Karelia.  *In 1994, Patrushev moved to Moscow where he served deputy chief of the Organisation and Inspection Department of the FSB. *He was Chief of the President’s Main Control Directorate from May to August 1998. *In August 1998, Patrushev was appointed Deputy Chief of the Presidential Staff. *He was appointed Deputy Director of the FSB, and Head of the Economic Security Department, on 6 October 1998.  *In January 1999, Patrushev was promoted to 1st Deputy Director of the FSB. *In August 1999, he was appointed Director of the FSB and Head of the CIS Security Council.  *In May 2000, Patrushev was reappointed by President Putin to serve as Head of the FSB.  *In January 2001 he was given additional responsibility for counter-terrorism operations for the North Caucasus region.  *Transferred to Security Council on 12 May 2008 by newly inaugurated President Dmitry Medvedev.

MISCELLANEOUS: *Son, Dmitry (‘77), CEO of Rosselkhozbank (RSHB), the farm industry lender, with assets of around 900 billion roubles.  *Son, Andrei (‘81), advisor to Igor Sechin at Rosneft. *Brother, Viktor, Deputy Director “Megafon”.  *Went to school with Boris Gryzlov, and Sergei Smirnov. *Allegedly involved in the theft and smuggling of precious Karelian birch timber in the early 90s.  *Possibly met Rashid Nurgaliyev in the early 90s.  *Tied to Sergei Stepashin (former FSB head, and former PM under Boris Yeltsin).  *Believed to have kompromat on Putin.  *Insecure. *Army General (11 July 2001). *Holds various medals and awards.

SUBORDINATES: *The Russian Security Council oversees the three foreign intelligence agencies, the Federal Customs Service, the Federal Security Service, the Defence Ministry, the Border Guards, the Interior Troops, and the Railway Troops. *It was established to provide a high-level forum within which Russia’s president can interact directly and concurrently with his key ministers and agency heads.  *The Russian Security Council is not a deliberative body that arrives at decisions on its own.
