NAME: ALEXANDER VLADIMIROVICH KONOVALOV

BORN: 9 June, 1968 in Leningrad.

EDUCATION: *Mr Konovalov graduated with a degree in jurisprudence from St Petersburg State University in 1992.  *He holds a Ph.D. (kandidat nauk) degree in law, as well as the title of senior legal councillor.

CAREER: *Mr Konovalov served in the Soviet Army from 1986-1988.  *From 1992 to 2005 Konovalov worked in the Office of Public Prosecutor for St. Petersburg. *In 1992, Mr Konovalov worked as an assistant to the prosecutor of Vyborg District, St Petersburg.  *From 1992-1994, he was an investigator at the Vyborg District Prosecutor’s Office, St Petersburg. *From 1994-1997, Mr Konovalov was prosecutor at the Federal Security Law Enforcement Supervision Department at the St Petersburg Prosecutor’s Office.  *He was Deputy Prosecutor of Moskovsky District, St Petersburg from 1997-1998.  *Mr Konovalov served as Prosecutor of the Moskovsky District St Petersburg from 1998-2001.  *From 2001-2005, he was Deputy Prosecutor of St Petersburg.  *In February 2005, Mr Konovalov became Prosecutor of the Republic of Bashkortostan.  *He was appointed Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga District in November 2005.  *On May 12th, 2008 under the new government headed by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Konovalov was made Minister for Justice, replacing the outgoing Vladimir Ustinov.

MISCELLANEOUS: *Born to a family of a military seaman. *Possible protégé of Anatoly Sobchak.  *Mr Konovalov is a friend of Nikolai Vinnichenko, and Nikolai Vinnichenko is a friend and former classmate of… Dmitry Medvedev.  *In Bashkortostan, Konovalov was in charge of handling the fallout from the police crackdown in Blagoveshchensk in December 2004.  *Konovalov has the rank of senior justice adviser within the branches of the Ministry of Justice of Russia. *He is a member of the Security Council of Russia and of the Presidential Council for Implementation of the National Priority Projects and of Demographic Policy. *He is the author of two monographs and twenty articles on civil law.  *He is also a candidate for the Master of Sport in Rowing.
