NAME: SERGEI BORISOVICH IVANOV

BORN: 31 January, 1953 in Leningrad

EDUCATION: *Mr Ivanov is a graduate of the Translation Department of the Linguistics Faculty (Zhdanov), Leningrad State University (1975).

CAREER: *Mr Ivanov completed KGB training in 1976.  *He worked at KGB headquarters from 1979 until 1981.  *He served for two years as Second Secretary at the Soviet Embassy in London from 1981 until 1983.  *From 1983 until 1998, Mr. Ivanov worked in a variety of overseas intelligence posts, including Finland and Kenya.  *He served as Deputy Director of the FSB in 1998.  *In 1999, he was named Head of the Strategic Planning and Analysis Department of the Federal Security Service (FSB).  *Mr Ivanov was appointed Secretary of the Security Council on 15 November 1999.  *He was named Minister of Defence on 28 March, 2001, and was reappointed to this position in Mikhail Fradkov’s government on 9 March 2004.  *Mr Ivanov was given the additional position of First Deputy Prime Minister responsible for the military-industrial complex and high-technology development in November 2005.  *He was subsequently made the Chairman of the government commission on nanotechnology.  *He was relieved of his position as Minister of Defence in February 2007.  *Mr Ivanov was made Deputy Minister accountable for the reform of the Security Services in Mr Putin’s Government in May 2008.

MISCELLANEOUS: *Speaks English and Swedish (fluently); and some French. *Married to Irina Ivanova.  *Mr Ivanov is a protégé of Vladimir Putin.  *He has two sons: Alexander Sergeyevich Ivanov {1978?}, works at Vneshekonombank, and Sergei Sergeyevich Ivanov, {1982?}, is a vice president at Gazprombank.  *Hobbies include fishing, reading mysteries, watching hockey, football, and basketball. *Member, National Glory Board. *Supervisory Board Member, Vneshekonombank. *Chairman of the Board of Directors of the United Aircraft Corporation (OAK).  Created in 2006, and 75% owned by the Russian Government, OAK controls companies including aircraft producers Sukhoi, Tupolev, and Ilyushin; the leasing company Ilyushin Finance, and numerous others.  It is valued at some $4.5 billion.  *Longest serving Minister of Defence.
