NAME: YURI YAKOVLEVICH CHAIKA
BORN: 1951
EDUCATION: *Mr Chaika was a student at the Polytechnic Institute, Komsomolsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk Territory from 1968 to 1970. *He graduated from Sverdlovsk Law Institute, where he majored in jurisprudence in 1976.
CAREER: *Mr Chaika worked as an electrician at the ship-building yard in Nikolayevsk-on-Amur in 1970. *He participated in active service with the Armed Forces from 1970 to 1972. *Mr Chaika was a probationer, investigator, Ust-Uda District Prosecutor’s Office, Irkutsk Region from 1976 to 1978. *He held the post of Deputy Inter-District Prosecutor, Tulun, Irkutsk Region from 1978 to 1979. *He was the Transport Prosecutor, East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office, Taishet from 1979 to 1983. *Mr Chaika was the chief, investigation section, East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office from 1983 to 1984. *He held the post of instructor, administrative bodies section, Irkutsk Regional Committee, CPSU from 1984 to 1986. *From 1986 to 1988, he was the First Deputy Prosecutor, chief of investigation section, Irkutsk Region. *From 1988 to 1990, Mr Chaika held the post of chief, state and law section, Irkutsk Regional Committee, CPSU. *He was the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor from 1990 to 1992. *From 1992 to 1995, Mr Chaika was the Prosecutor, Irkutsk Region. *He was appointed First Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation in November 1995. *On April 2, 1999, Mr Chaika was appointed acting Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation. *He resigned as acting Prosecutor General, and retired on pension on August 9, 1999. *On August 17, 1999, Mr Chaika was appointed Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation. *He was subsequently reappointed to this post by the succeeding governments of Mikhail Kasyanov, and Mikhail Fradkov. *Mr Chaika was made the Prosecutor General in June 2006 after a scandal involving Vladimir Ustinov forced the latter’s resignation as Prosecutor General.
MISCELLANEOUS: *Mr Chaika is decorated with the medal for military valour. *He holds the honorific title of Merited Jurist of the Russian Federation. *He was named Man of the Year in Law by Who is Who magazine in 2000. *Mr Chaika was decorated with the Order of the Badge of Honor in 2001. *Enemy of Alexander Bastrykin, head of Investigative Office.
