NAME: ALEXANDER VASILYEVICH BORTNIKOV

BORN: 15 November 1951 in Perm

EDUCATION: *In 1973 Alexander Vasilyevich Bortnikov graduated from the Leningrad Institute for Engineers of Railroad Transport.

CAREER: *In 1975 Bortnikov was invited to work in the KGB under the USSR Council of Ministers.  *He finished Higher Courses in Studies at the KGB in Moscow, and then joined the operative and leading personnel in the subdivisions of counterintelligence in the Leningrad Region KGB Directorate.  *On 8 June 2003, Bortnikov took up the position of head of the Directorate of the Federal Security Service (FSB) for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region. *On 2 March 2004, Bortnikov was named deputy director of the FSB, as well as chief of the Department of Economic Security of the FSB. *In July of the same year, following the reorganization of the FSB, Bortnikov relinquished his duties as deputy director of the department, and the department headed by him became the Service for Economic Security.  *On May 12 2008 Bortnikov was named as Director of the FSB by order of President Dmitry Medvedev.  *Bortnikov succeeded Nikolai Patrushev in his role as chairman of the Council of Directors of Security and Special Service Organs in the CIS countries.

 

MISCELLANEOUS: *Bortnikov is married, and has one son.  *Alleged to have signed off on the assassinations of both Sasha Litvinenko, and Andrei Kozlov.  *Connected to the Siloviki since the 1990s.  *Tied to General-Colonel Sergei Smirnov.  *Believed to be tied to President Dmitry Medvedev.  *Member, Board of Directors, Sovkomflot (state-owned sea shipping company). *In December 2006 Bortnikov was honoured with the title of Army General.  *He holds several awards and medals, for example the recognition “For Services Before the Fatherland” of the 3rd and 4th Degree and “For Military Services.”
